Government Asks Businesses and Public to Help Combat Terrorism

The government has launched a new public consultation to help counter terrorism efforts in crowded places. The consultation document, named ‘Working Together to Protect Crowded Places’, addresses local authorities, companies, police and the general public, suggesting ways in which they can work together.

The results of this consultation will help local authorities understand their role and the difference they can make in the fight against terrorism. Public areas like clubs, sports stadia, schools, shopping malls etc. are especially prone to such attacks. The Counter Terrorism Security Advisers (CTSAs) from the police are for the first time assessing the risks involved in crowded places throughout the country and this will help guide the public and different bodies to prioritise their safety plan.

Lord West also said that safety and security is of utmost importance to the Government and that everyone in the society can help achieve it by making a contribution. He said that a lot of effort has already been put into improving the security of crowded places, but that more needs to be done. An action plan to put the ideas on the table into motion is currently being formulated.

He is of the opinion that the Government and police alone cannot achieve safety. Local authorities and the public have to be made a part of it, and businesses in particular can help in the implementation of safety plans. A practical advice shall also be launched for the planners involved in planning crowded buildings to help deal with vulnerabilities.

Lord West also announced an additional £5m investment in public protection against terrorist attacks in crowded places as part of the new counter terrorism strategy named ‘CONTEST’.

Make sure that your company is not in the dark when it comes to new health and safety regulations. The other way to keep up-to-date is to make sure that you take advantage of the nebosh training courses operated by reputable companies such as Workplace Law.
